Hogarth Shakespeare- Macbeth

July 1st 5:00pm to 7:00pm

Reading and Analysis of Jo Nesbo's retelling of Macbeth.

Led by  Dr. Karin Waidley

Set in the 1970s in a run-down, rainy industrial town, Jo Nesbo’s Macbeth centers around a police force struggling to shed an incessant drug problem. Duncan, chief of police, is idealistic and visionary, a dream to the townspeople but a nightmare for criminals. The drug trade is ruled by two drug lords, one of whom—a master of manipulation named Hecate—has connections with the highest in power, and plans to use them to get his way.

Hecate’s plot hinges on steadily, insidiously manipulating Inspector Macbeth: the head of SWAT and a man already susceptible to violent and paranoid tendencies. What follows is an unputdownable story of love and guilt, political ambition, and greed for more, exploring the darkest corners of human nature, and the aspirations of the criminal mind.

In the near future, a time of artificial intelligence: 86-year-old Marjorie (veteran actress Lois Smith- TWISTER, TRUE BLOOD, DEAD MAN WALKING) – a jumble of disparate, fading memories – has a handsome new companion (Jon Hamm- MAD MEN, BABY DRIVER) who looks like her deceased husband and is programmed to feed the story of her life back to her. What would we remember, and what would we forget, if given the chance? Also starring Academy Award®-winners Geena Davis (THELMA & LOUISE) and Tim Robbins (THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, MYSTIC RIVER), MARJORIE PRIME is based on Jordan Harrison’s Pulitzer-Nominated play, exploring memory and identity, love and loss.

Marjorie Prime is presented as part of Off Square 2nd Act - Theatre for Lifelong Learners - and supported by the Center of Wonder.
