DeathTrap
OFF sQUARE tHEATRE Company BEGINS THE YEAR WITH MYSTERY  Is it possible that murder is an aphrodisiac? Jackson Hole, WY (January 2008) – Who’ll do it? Not even the character themselves are certain who might pull the last trigger, smother the final breath, or plunge the closing dagger in Deathtrap, opening January 17 at the Center for the Arts. Off Square Theatre Company brings five crazies to life in this murder-mystery-comedy-thriller where the plot twists and turns like a criminal mind. Sidney Bruhl (Terry Schwab), a once-famous, now nearly washed-up, playwright and his wife Myra (Erika Pearsall) must employ some bloody clever tricks to steal credit for a brilliant manuscript from the yet-unknown Clifford Anderson (Jamie Reilly).  Is the script good enough to kill for?  The ingenious plot thickens into a play within a play. Invited into the Bruhls’ home – replete with medieval crossbows, mace, and Houdini’s handcuffs – Anderson must prove to be as cunning as the characters in his manuscript “Deathtrap”. Practice makes perfect when it comes to murder. Neither the characters nor the audience is sure who has the loaded weapon… or if they mean to use it. The play scoffs at the theater industry, buries people alive, and turns lie into truth. Driven by the stench of fame and fortune, the characters battle wits around the proverbial deathtrap. An eccentric German psychic (Judith Townsend) and a shrewd lawyer add to the cast’s bizarre antics. One of these devilish characters will be left standing in a quest to be the one-who-wrote-it.  Ira Levin’s Deathtrap won an “Edgar” from the Mystery Writers of America in 1979 and boasted one the longest runs on Broadway. As usual, Artistic Producing Director John Briggs inserts his own explosive devices and killer instincts to heighten the humor. “The sly absurdity and suspense of Levin’s works, both his manuscripts and novels, make them highly popular. I’ve had a good time playing with the details and the melodrama,” he says. “Keeping a well-known play fresh is one of the more exciting parts of directing, and I think the region will be pleased with all the surprises in this piece.”    Deathtrap runs January 17- February 3, 2008. Nightly shows, Thursday-Saturday at 7:00 pm; matinees Saturday, January 26 at 2:00 pm and Sunday, January 27 at 3:00 pm. The Box Office and the Center for the Arts are located at 265 S. Cache Street, two blocks south of the town square in Jackson. Ticket prices start at $25 for adults and $20 for children and seniors.
