Theatre Education expands the imagination and encourages students to think, question and inquire about their world. Off Square's Education Program provides a supportive and challenging environment for children and adults to play, explore and create. Scholarships available for all programs.

Three easy ways to register:

  3. or stop by our offices @ 240 S. Glenwood in the Center for the Arts and register in-person. Office hours are 9 – 5 pm, M-F.

**UPCOMING AUDITIONS**

Auditions for the 2008-09 OFF SQUARE PLAYERS will be held Thursday, September 11th from 

4-6pm.  If interested and between the ages of 12-18, please call 733-3021 to sign up.  Please prepare

32 bars from an uptempo and a ballad or one complete song and to perform  AND 2 fully memorized

contrasting monologues.  Please bring a photo/resume to your audition and be prepared to stay for up 

to two hours.

NOTE:  There is a financial commitment if chosen to be a part of the conservatory program.

The Creative Adventure

An Acting Class for Ages 5-7

Saturdays, 10 – 11am, September 27 – November 15 (eight weeks)

Discover the creative adventure of theatre through imaginative games, activities and exercises incorporating movement, dramatic play and literature.

 

Journey to the Center of the Imagination

An Acting Class for Ages 8-10

Mondays, 4 - 5:30pm, September 22-November 10 (eight weeks)

Tuition $150

Explore acting through theatre games, character and movement, and process drama in a fun and supportive environment. Theatre is challenging fun!

 

Self Scripting

Adults (18 & up)

Wednesdays, 6:30 – 8:30pm, September 24 – November 13 (eight weeks)

Tuition $150

We all have experienced moments in our lives that have had an impact on our growth and development.  The need to share the impact of such events is at the very core of being human. 

In this course you will create your own solo performance emphasizing characterization, living truthfully onstage and the creative process. Developing original, issue-oriented material enhanced by music, movement, props and theatre media born of your own creative vision is an exciting way to share our stories.  

 

Beginning Improvisation

Adults (18 & up) Mondays, 6:30-8:30pm, September22 – November 10 (eight weeks)

Tuition $150

Improvisation means performing without a script and “without a net!”  Spend eight weeks honing spontaneity, timing and team building in the thrilling “in the moment” creative world of improvisation.  Taught by seasoned improvisational performer,Todd Hjelt,

 

Intermediate Improvisation

Adults, 18 and older

Ongoing:  2nd and  4th Sunday of every month 7- 9pm (Begins Sun. Sept. 28)

Annual Fee $150 or Drop-In Fee $10

This class is for those with some previous experience in Improvisation.  Taught by Todd Hjelt, this class builds on basic skills/exercises learned in Beginning Improv  class .  Permission from the instructor or completion of Beginning Improv is required to attend. 

Todd Hjelt is a member of Jackson’s own Improv Comedy Troupe, Out of Thin Air (OOTA), and resident artist with Off Square Theatre Company.

 

Second City Improvisation Workshop

(Taught by the Second City Touring Group) 

Ages 12 - Adult

Sunday, January 18th 2009.  Time: TBA

Fee:  $50  for two hour workshop.

Youth Troupe

Tuition $500/ annual fee.

Designed for the dedicated student of theatre, ages 12-18.  This conservatory training emphasizes total actor development through character study, scene-study, movement, vocal technique and improvisation.  Entrance is by audition and interview.  Call for more information or visit our website www.offsquare.org.

 

Stage Combat Intensive Workshop

Ages 16-Adult

Sept. 15 - 24, Weekdays- Eve Classes/ Wk/ends TBA, 30 total hrs/Certification Exam, Sept 24.

Tuition $400

Stage Combat is the fascinating branch of performance that simulates onstage fighting without injuring the performers!  This is an intensive stage combat workshop, focusing on the skills of hand to hand combat, culminating in the opportunity to become a nationally certified stage combatant.  The workshop will be taught by Jason Armit, an SAFD (Society of American Fight Directors) certified stage combat instructor.   Students who complete this 30 hour segment and pass the certification exam will receive certification from the SAFD

(The Society of American Fight Directors is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting safety and fostering excellence in the art of directing staged combat/theatrical violence. Our members have worked around the world as Fight directors and stunt coordinators.)  

 

Play Readings

Off Square’s Play Reading series explores seminal plays from the past and the present.  The readings are free, informal and open to all members of the community to take a part or just listen.  A relaxed evening of theatre, and discussion and—it’s FREE!

Cache.  Classes require a 50% payment at time of registration.  A 90% refund is given to withdrawals two weeks prior to class start date, after which point no credits or refunds please.  All classes will be taught by Off Square’s professional theatre staff plus special guest summer instructors!  SCHOLARSHIPS:Scholarships are available for all programs.  Off Square obtains grants and contributions to make its educational programs accessible to all.  For scholarship information, call 307.733.3021.  Early registration is encouraged and recommended for scholarship students.  LOCATION:  Camps and classes will meet in the Off Square Studio, in the Center for the Arts, 265 S. Cache.

(NOTE: Planet Earth Performance Art Camp will meet in the Art Associations’s Multi Purpose Studio in the Center for the Arts at 240 S. Glenwood.  Costume Camp will meet on The Off Square Costume Shop located at 650 Elk Ave. #6.)
