Petticoat Rules: The Jackson Hole Revue
by Mary Murfitt and Pam Drews Phillips
(in rotating repertory with Always...Patsy Cline)
July 8 – July 30
Off Square Theatre revives Jackson Hole’s original musical by local
composer and pianist Pam Drews Phillips and NY writer Mary Murffit.
This is new version of their earlier success with new songs, new scenes
and presented in the new Center for the Arts. Their imaginative score
embraces several different musical genres including swing jazz,
Broadway and funky C&W. The audiences will be dancing in the
aisles. Last summer, Off Square’s Always… Patsy Cline played to
sell-out houses and for six performances only, leaving many sorry they
didn’t come early. Early reservations are encouraged.
Petticoat Rules is the story of five incredible Jackson Hole women who
ran for town council, mayor and sheriff at a time when women didn’t
have the right to vote… AND WON! Their story was written up in the
biggest newspapers of the time and may have been part of the catalyst
for the ratification of the 19th amendment, giving women the right to
vote. Many of the family names still survive in Jackson. The musical
also follows the story of Cissy Paterson, a modern woman of American
and European society and definitely ahead of her time. She came to
Jackson Hole prior to the 1920’s and fell in love with valley and with
Cal Carrington – a cowboy working on the Bar B C. Cissy, the
sophisticated Washington D.C. countess and Chicago Sun heiress, and
Cal, the sometime horse thief and first-rate ranch hand and guide
became legendary. Their on-again/off-again romance lasted for years.
With a cast of twelve and a five-piece band this is a full-scale
musical production. Off Square Theatre’s Producing Artistic Director,
John R. Briggs, directs Petticoat Rules. Briggs has directed at
regional theatres throughout the United States, including Alabama
Shakespeare Festival, Asolo Theatre, Buffalo Studio Theatre, Tennessee
Repertory Theatre, Georgia Shakespeare Festival, Florida Stage Company,
and the Barter Theatre.
